Book Guide

A favorite theme in Cambodian folktales involves small but clever animal getting the better of someone stronger and meaner but not as bright. In Cambodian society, after all, farmers and villagers often felt powerless compared to their mighty landlords and kings, so they naturally reveled in stories in which the tables were turned and the weak go the better of the mighty. So it is with Brother Rabbit, who time and again outwits toothy crocodiles and angry elephants. And he manages to stay cool and cheerful throughout it all.
