Book Guide

In the ancient castle, Brannlyr, on the lonely Welsh coast lived young Hugh of Alleyn. No flags flew from the battlements; no knights jousted in the field. Hugh himself was neither page nor squire. For Hugh's father had died fighting for Britain and King Arthur, and his mother would allow no sign of war near her home or her son.

But Hugh heard the stories of Camelot and the knights of the Round Table; and he heard of Joseph of Arimathea and the Holy Grail, and of the perfect knight who would achieve the Quest of the Grail. And so he set out from Brannlyr, visions of tournaments and chivalry and worship and glory before his eyes. His travels took him to the holy monastery at Glastonbury, where he learned a startling thing about his lineage; to fabled Camelot, where he met Gwynneth, who had a strange connection with his past; with Galahad in search of the Holy Grail; through the darkness of the battle that brought about the end of King Arthur's court and into the faint light of hope for the future. And here, the end of his own quest, Hugh found he had come full circle.

In this fine historical novel, Gwendolyn Bowers has carefully woven the threads of Hugh's story into the Arthurian legends, in and out of the lives of the great knights of the Round Table, Hugh's own quest and his recognition of it are told against the background of the Grail symbolism.
