Who are the Wombles?
Well, meet Bungo Womble, one of the younger Wombles who with his two hundred and forty-three relations lives under Wimbledon Common. You may in fact already have met him for he is responsible for keeping tidy quite a large area of the Common. It is the cast-offs of human-beings — chocolate biscuits thrown out of prams, parts of bicycles that have fallen off, and old copies of The Times (Great Uncle Bulgaria's favourite reading) — that provide the Wombles with the necessities of life.
Of course from time to time things do run out, but Tobermory who is in charge of the workshop is expert at making things from bits and pieces, and Madame Cholet the cook produces the most delicious meals from practically nothing. So life goes on very pleasantly under the Common — for most of the time.
Elisabeth Beresford has written some extremely enjoyable children's books in the last few years (including the Moorhen books: The Hidden Mill and The Mulberry Street Team). The fantasy world of the Wombles is going to win her a host of new young admirers.
