Vison, the Mink was a hero to inspire respect and even a certain admiration. From puppyhood to old age and virtual sovereignty among the wildlife along Muddy Branch, Vison was a law unto himself. He plundered and hissed and hated his way through life, a lithe, beautiful little bandit who seemed not to know the meaning of fear.
As in Vulpes, The Red Fox, the hunter and trapper, Al and Will set their traps for the wild creatures along the Branch, but Vison eludes them again and again. Between the wily mink and an old Negro, Sam, there exists a strange friendship, a kind of kinship, and many times the old man helps the mink escape when the hunters are hot on his trail.
Time passes, season follows season, and Vison grows old and just a shade less agile. For some time he has resented the presence of a handsome young mink in what he considers his exclusive territory. Finally he swims upstream to challenge the youngster. Vison does not know that he may be setting out on his last journey; the interloper is his own son, heir to all the viciousness and cunning of the father, and stronger by many seasons.
Authentic nature lore written with drama and warm understanding. A book for everyone, regardless of age, who loves the out-of-doors.
