"There will be a sea of gold...
as far as the eye can see..."
And as far as the heart can reach.

Fedir and Alina loved their life in Kyiv, Ukraine, and most of all their family, the most precious blessing of all. Their fields were growing bright, and their first child was on the way. Yana, their daughter, was born just as Ukraine won its independence from Russia. As Yana grew, she learned all her mother's recipes for breads and cakes and how to make pysanky eggs. Years passed and Yana married and she and her husband welcomed a daughter and a grand sunflower harvest. Then one cold day in February the villagers heard something like distant thunder—except there were no clouds in the sky. The Russians had invaded Ukraine, and word traveled that a convoy of trucks and war machines was heading to Kyiv.  The life the family had known was no more. They left their beloved home, first for Poland and then for a place far away called America.

Beloved storyteller Patricia Polacco draws on her Ukrainian heritage to tell this intergenerational story of family love and the traditions of the Ukrainian people.
