Finding out how men and women lived thousands of years ago is the object of archaeology, says Mary Chubb. She believes if all the difficult terms are explained in simple language, with pictures to make them still easier, that children will immediately be fascinated with this most human of studies. She has experimented by talking to quite young children and they never stop asking her questions: 'How do you know the King said that, all that time ago—could he write?' and 'What sort of clothes did the children wear—what did they do—did they have toys?' So the enquiries run. Thinking of these children and of older people, too, Mary Chubb has succeeded in answering the questions above and many others as well.
Her delightful text supported by Jill Wyatt's lovely coloured pictures makes this the best possible introduction to a fascinating and increasingly popular subject.
