Book Guide

Many children have an imaginary playmate, and some develop an imaginary identity of their own. All will welcome Andy's Mr. Cunningham, who may be the most dignified alter ego a child has ever selected. Always dressed in a proper buisness suit, sporting a handsome mustache, Mr. Cunningham settles down in Andy's household and appears to take up permanent residence.

Undismayed, Mother copes with the complications that follow and succeeds in sending Mr. Cunningham off to Buffalo whenever Andy's presence is required in kindergarten. Although a few dull-witted people continue to address Mr. Cunningham as Andy in the neighborhood, the family ignores them. The time comes, however, when Andy is needed at home again. Then clever Mr. Cunningham is quick to find a solution, one that delights Andy, Andy's mother, and the reader.

Meg Wohlberg's amusing drawings of Mr. Cunningham-Andy add just the right touch to this happy picture-book story about a boy whose big imagination has won him many friends among listeners and beginning readers.
