On November 29, 1901, explorer Robert Scott made his first trip to the frozen continent of Antarctica. With average winter temperatures ranging from 14 to -22 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -30 degrees Celsius)—not to mention the relentless icy wind—Antarctica was the only continent on Earth on which no people had ever lived. Only the hardiest of animals called it home.
Scott and his crew spent two years in Antarctica studying the land and the wildlife. They were the first humans to see an emperor penguin colony and to observe how the penguins cared for their young. They also saw whales, birds, and tiny sea creatures that were yet to be named.
In his diaries, Scott left behind detailed accounts of his journeys and explorations. Animals Robert Scott Saw brings those accounts to life in vivid detail, through photographs and lush illustrations. This is the story of Scott's historic Antarctic adventure and the animals he saw along the way.
