Beginning readers who love horses will ride joyously with Billy and his pony Blaze as together they explore the countryside in search of adventure.
One day they meet an old man who tells them that he is one of the few people who remember the whereabouts of an abandoned stone quarry. He gives them careful directions and they set off.
A fallen tree blocks their way, but both boy and pony enjoy a challenge. Soon they are passing sights that mean the quarry is near, and suddenly—there it is! But the excitement is far from over. A fox dashes along the high wall at the far side of the quarry, chased by a dog. Then the dog slips . . .
How Billy performs a brave deed and wins a new friend climaxes a story that young readers will read with gusto and delight. C. W. Anderson's pictures are, as always, filled with vigor and with the warmth of the relationship between a boy and his pony.
