Book Guide

A shaggy little burro who blazed trails through the wild and rocky world of the Grand Canyon is the hero of this exciting new story by Marguerite Henry. As lovable as Misty of Chincoteague, and with the free spirit of King of the Wind, this book adds a new note to the Henry-Dennis tradition—a baffling mystery.

An old prospector living in the canyon found the little burro running wild along Bright Angel Creek, named him Brighty, and held him not with ropes but with friendship. When the prospector mysteriously died, Bright again roamed free. On his trips up and down the canyon wall he hobnobbed with map-makers, artists, and geologists, and soon they were following his trail from rim to river.

Though he was never fully tamed, Brighty made many friends, among them Uncle Jimmy Owen, the famous lion hunter, and President Theodore Roosevelt. It was Uncle Jim who bound up Brighty's wounds after his fight with a mountain lion, and it was Uncle Jim and Brighty together who solved the mystery of the old prospector.

Over 100 illustrations by Wesley Dennis add to the beauty of this book and recreate the splendor of the Grand Canyon.

Brighty!
Reviewed by Nancy Kelly
Brighty was based on an actual burro who lived from about 1882-1922. Named after a creek that flows into the Grand Canyon, he spent his days carrying water for tourists. The story is a murder-mystery and guess who holds the key to the answer? Brighty, of course!...
