Book Guide

Forced to leave Greece when he is unjustly accused of attempted murder, young Jason Tros makes his way to Florida's west coast where he joins his countrymen in sponge fishing industry. Intelligent and aggressive, Jason soon rebels against the injustice and prejudice shown his people, and resolves to buy his own boat and work independently in an attempt to break the monopoly held by the rich owners of the sponging fleets. But again and again his one-man crusade brings him to the verge of disaster: when the sponge buyers band together to shut him out of the market, when an angry mob threatens to burn his boat, and when his instigation of a government investigation throws the entire industry into a turmoil.

Against a colorful background of sea and ships, this story of Jason's triumph moves swiftly to it's gripping climax. The author's picture of hurricane and shipwreck and the perils of a brave lad who fought alone for a just cause, makes fascinating reading that will give young readers a deep appreciation of an important national group and its contribution to American industry.
