The author of Pecos Bill and Lightning has brought to children more folk tales from our South-west, told with the same warm and friendly humor that distinguished her first book.
Their hero is Don Coyote, wisest of all the animals. Although a champion of the underdog, Don Coyote liked nothing better than to take advantage of the stupidity of the other animals, just for the fun of it. Only he could have persuaded O'Possum, after twice tricking him in other ways, that he should hold up the world. Only he could have settled the quarrel between King Leon and Queen Leona, or played a trick on Wihio, who boasted that he was cleverest of mortals. But sometimes—just often enough to make him human—Don Coyote got fooled himself.
These are stories which, partaking of the qualities of both fable and folklore, will appeal to the imagination of children.
