Whether twelve-year-old Erik is running through the forest above the Swedish coast or camping with his friends, he is looking for an opportunity to snap the perfect photograph. When a thrush's call lures Erik off the route of a cross-country race, he finds himself down on the shoreline next to the cottage of the recluse fisherman, Gammal Gunnar. Braving a conversation with the taciturn old man, Erik begins an unlikely friendship with him which develops into an apprenticeship under Gunnar in a surprising variety of subjects—including photography! Not least, Gunnar helps the usually friendly Erik to turn around an annoying relationship with Bertil, Erik's boastful city-bred cousin, paving the way for Erik's most exciting and satisfying Christmas yet.
