Whether it's a scrap of cloth tied to a stick or an elaborate banner, flags have long been used by people to announce themselves, their lands, and their beliefs. And when our nation's founders began their journey to independence, flags inspired and led them every step of the way—through the American Revolution and beyond, all the way to the "Star-Spangled Banner" that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814.
