A very original boy named Henry once wrote down in a book the account of his hilarious experiments with "free enterprise" in a small college town in New Jersey. His colleague in the endeavor was a girl named Midge Glass, and the memorable enterprise was ably recounted in Henry Reed, Inc.
Now Henry has chosen to write a "top-notch travel book about the United States," in which, he says, "you'll find what you want to know, not just names of restaurants, motels and museums. It will tell what states sell firecrackers, where the best rodeos are held, where there's good fishing . . . and whether the natives of different towns are friendly or hostile." The inspiration for this unique Baedeker came during a trip which he and Midge and Midge's family were making from San Francisco back east. The trip, in a station wagon with ever increasing cargo, is anything but stodgy, as can be verified by any tourist who happened to be around Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Disneyland, and other points east!
And anyone who was not around can read all about some marvelous "sights" other than big trees an centuries-old strata, all described in Henry's breezy dead-pan style.
Robert McCloskey has made pictures of the "sights" and adventures and naturally added to the fun.
