The red fox and his charming little family are the center of this story. The fox is often considered a rascal, and he is feared by small animals, but he is a good father. Mrs. Goudey writes of him with sympathetic understanding, as she does of all animals.

The rest of the book gives a brief introduction to other "wild dogs"—including the wolf and coyote.
