The remarkable Golda Meir traveled from a poverty-stricken girlhood in Milwaukee to leadership of the state of Israel. She had to surmount countless obstacles and make painful personal decisions to achieve her destiny, and her story is inseparable from that of Israel, from the days when it was but a dream to its present complex realities.

Golda Meir early showed the determination that was to mark her entire career. When her Russian immigrant parents refused to let her continue her schooling in Milwaukee because she was a girl, 14-year-old Golda ran away to distant Denver. There she worked to earn a living and educate herself. During this time, she became involved in the Zionist movement and found her goal in the creation of a Jewish homeland in Israel.

When she and her young, scholarly husband emigrated to the rough, underdeveloped land that was then Palestine, Golda Meir quickly became the spokesman for her kibbutz. Being a wife and mother could not satisfy her yearning for greater challenge and achievement and in the years that followed—years of rising Jewish strength and increasing conflict with both the British and the Arabs—Golda Meir moved upward in the ranks of Jewish leadership. After the bitter war for Israeli independence, she served as Minister of Labor, then as Foreign Minister, learning to cope with Israel's internal and external problems and to battle for what she thought was right. When she
became Prime Minister, no one doubted that she had the strength and wisdom to guide Israel through some of its most perilous hours.
