You have read of brave deeds of American pioneers in the forests, mountains, and across the plains. But others found adventure on the seas. Of these John Paul Jones was the most famous.
John Paul was a Scotch gardener's son. But his early love for the sea caused him to become a sailor. Later, he joined the Americans in their fight for justice and freedom. His skill and daring at sea helped win American independence in the Revolutionary War.
John Paul Jones was at his best when he faced danger. His refusal to accept defeat became the spirit of the navy. He earned the proud title "Father of the American Navy".
