Kit Carson was sixteen when he first rode the Santa Fe Trail west to New Mexico from his home in Missouri. He soon became one of the greatest of the mountain men. His colorful career included scouting, trapping, fighting, buffalo hunting. Three times he accompanied the famous explorer, John Charles Frémont, on his western expeditions. ???tized a Catholic at the age of thirty-two, Carson participated in the Mexican War and the War Between the States, in his later years making valued contributions toward peace and justice as a government Indian agent.
