Book Guide

Have you ever met someone, been somewhere, or tried something that changed your life?

That's what happened to Maria Reiche when she stepped foot in Peru as a young woman. She never wanted to leave. And, when she first saw the Nazca Lines that had been etched into the country's desert, she was spellbound. These Lines of fantastical animals were a mystery. Nobody knew how they were made or why.

Maria knew immediately she had to find out why the Lines were created. She knew she had to see if there were more. She knew she had to take care of them. And, most importantly, she knew she had to convince people how precious and incredible they were. Thanks to her passion and dedication, the Nazca Lines have been preserved, though their mystery still remains.

Kirkus Reviews

Lady of the Lines
The engaging narrative is part process story and part biography; Reiche’s unwavering commitment is nicely reflected by Chavarri’s depiction of her work from a variety of perspectives—close up as the Lines emerge, from above as a figure becomes clear, and then as a sky filled with constellations (Reiche theorized that the Lines were star maps)...
