Book Guide

Little Men is a story dearly beloved by children since it first appeared many years ago; and although it was written primarily for boys, boys and girls alike took it to their hearts.

Here is tomboy "Jo" March again, of Little Women, only now she is Mrs. Bhaer, the wife of the absent-minded German professor. Together they conduct a school at Plumfield, and their children are a jolly, mischievous group other children love to read about. The story is one that stays with you. As May Lamberton Becker writes in her Introduction: "If you ask any grown-up woman who read this book when she was young what she remembers vividly about it, you will almost always get the same answer: 'The little cookstove!' Never was a toy so coveted by little girls of its period as this miniature stove on which children could really cook all by themselves."

Little Men is filled with events that children remember lovingly, and it is for this reason that it shares so fully in the popularity of Little Women and has been a prime favorite with young readers since it was published.

Obviously we think that Little Men is a beautiful and essential book - we named our website after it! Something about Plumfield stirred something in the core of my being. Something about the approach to formation of character and helping to shape souls prompted me to want to become a teacher and, most assuredly, a mother of boys. Read our review to understand why we love this novel so much and why we think that so many others will as well.
