Eva White Bird lived with her family in the town of Black Horse on an Indian reservation in the Dakotas. Every summer they moved down to the river bottom, where Eva and her friends could ride their ponies on the prairie and play games by the river. When Prairie Rose, Eva's Sioux doll, was lost, the little girl walked all the way back to the reservation to look for her. Not until the Christmas party the next winter was the mystery of the lost doll solved.
Lois Lenski has again given to boys and girls a clear, understanding picture of the life of a group of young Americans today. Their struggles against blizzards, hunger, floods and poverty are depicted with sympathy, as are the Sioux qualities of cheerfulness and generosity. Miss Lenski visited Sioux children in a Dakota reservation, and her knowledge of them has enabled her to add another colorful story to her Roundabout America series.
