This is a picture-story book of real kings and queens—rulers of England from early days to the present.
Here is Alfred the Great learning to read—a group of appealing boy kings—the Black Prince on his charger—Queen Elizabeth being attired in one of her three thousand dresses. There are charming pictures of Queen Victoria and her family, down to the present-day princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose.
Any child who owns this book cannot but gain some feeling of the pageantry and tradition that surrounds the English throne.
Alice Dalgliesh and Lois Malloy worked in collaboration on this book, so text and pictures grew together. The author was formerly a British subject, and has always wanted to write stories of English kings and queens. The artist is of British ancestry and also has a special interest in English history. For this book she has done careful research on periods and costumes. She has been particularly successful in selecting for her pictures those details which are likely to be of interest to children.
