There were six little girls and all their names began with S and they were making daisy chains when Martin Pippin appeared and told them it was time to go to bed which, of course, they did not want to do. So he agreed to tell them six stories and sing them six songs and guess which of the little girls was his daughter.
Here are the six stories and the six songs and a seventh one for the small baby in the clothes basket—but Gillian, to whom Martin was married, had the last word.
In this world of nonsense and fantasy Eleanor Farjeon is supremely at home. Her stories of fairies, pigs, mermaids, and pirates have charm and earthy humor that belong to the Sussex downs of which she writes. Here is a companion to Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard that will delight readers a little younger than those who enjoy that perennial favorite.
