Momotaro is a Japanese boy who is extraordinary in every way. To begin with, his adoptive parents find him inside a large, golden peach. And soon he grows to be stronger and wiser than men much older than he. Momotaro has a good heart, too, and when he is fifteen he sets off on an adventure to battle evil ogres who have long robbed and terrorized the people of the region. Joining forces with three remarkable animals along the way, Momotaro and his faithful band of companions travel over land and sea until they finally meet the ogre army in a terrible clash.
One of Japan's most popular folktales, Momotaro's story is a delightful and lively voyage of the imagination that can be enjoyed by young and old alike. This telling of it is illustrated with exquisite handscroll painting by the Japanese artist Kano Naganobu (1775-1828). Following the story is a brief postscript that provides interesting details about the illustrations, the artist who painted them, and about the origins of the story.
