Book Guide

Myeko wanted very much to feel as happy and comfortable in California as she had in her native Osaka, Japan, and most of all she wanted to have friends who would not laugh at her. It was hard, though, for a young girl who had just come from Japan to fit into an American school and an American community. Myeko's mother and father did not seem to understand her difficulties, and when her mother sent her off to school in a brand-new, bright red New Year's kimono, Myeko was mortified.

Little by little, though, the American children discovered that Myeko had some fascinating ideas and abilities. Orville, the class tease, found the Myeko could design marvelous kites; Carol, the artist, found that Myeko's drawings were different and special. Only Harriet still refused to be friends with Myeko, and finally even she was won by the gift of friendship.

Young readers everywhere will sympathize with Myeko's problems and rejoice in her happiness.

Mrs. Haugaard has the advice of Japanese friends on the details of her book.
