Book Guide

Here is a fascinating, but little known American story. "Old Abe" was a real eagle who was the mascot of the Eighth Wisconsin Regiment during the Civil War, and who captured the imagination of the country. His fame continued after the war; he even was present at the nomination of General Grant for the Presidency, and officiated at many other ceremonies.

Lorrain Sherwood told this story on her Going Places program over WOR and so many requests for the script came in that she and Katherine Milhous have now made it into a book that both children and adults may enjoy.
