Brinton Turkle has surpassed himself in his vibrant drawings for this—the first picture book to illustrate our traditional Thanksgiving song.
Long a favorite of children, Lydia Maria Child's classic poem first appeared in 1844 as "The Boy's Thanksgiving Day." It is reprinted here in its entirety, with many engaging, almost forgotten verses, together with simple piano and guitar accompaniments, and glowing full-color illustrations.
Brinton Turkle's bright, joyous drawings capture all the immediacy and excitement of an old-fashioned Thanksgiving as the family bundles together in the sleigh and sets out "over the river and through the wood," past wintry games and through the frosty November landscape. Bells ringing, the swift dapple gray, the stinging wind, Grandmother in her cap, the mouth-watering feast with its steamy hot pudding and pie—each detail is pictured with all the joy, warmth, and simple celebration of the good things in life expressed in the poem itself: "Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!"
