In 1913, an American heiress named Daisy Corning Stone Spedden penned a story as a Chirstmas present for her young son, Douglas. Recently discovered in an attic by a family member, this charming children's story, told through the eyes of a young boy's toy bear, opens a window on a vanished Edwardian way of life. It also contians an enthralling eyewitness account of the sinking of the Titanic—the disaster that continues to fascinate the world.
Daisy Spedden and her husband, Frederic, were a wealthy couple with a passion for travel. In early 1912, the Spedden family sailed from New York to Algiers and then on to the French Riviera. Returning through Paris, the family boarded the train for Cherbourg; there they took a small boat out to the huge Titanic.
On the night of the disaster, Polar is tucked under his master's arm as the Speddens are lowered down the side of the Titanic in a lifeboat. After the siniking, the survivors are swung up the side of the rescue ship. But Polar finds himself forgotten in the empty lifeboat...until a sailor resuces him and returns him to his joyous master.
Illustrated with beautifully evocative watercolors in perfect period style, and with family photos, postcards and keepsakes highlighting the text, Polar the Titanic Bear is a delightful read-aloud picture book that will captivate yound and old alike.
