Book Guide

One of the best-kept secrets of World War II provides Bernard Glemser with a striking and significant event on which to base this story of commando cunning.  Paul Martin, a teenage French boy, watched the activities of his Nazi conquerors with puzzled interest as they built a strange electronic device on the Normandy coast a few miles above Le Havre.  The Bowl was like nothing he had ever seen before, and he dutifully reported it to the French Underground.

Allied Headquarters in London listened eagerly as the young man's description crackled across the air from secret French transmitters, and Paul soon found himself "wanted" by the Germans for espionage and by the British for vital information that only he could give.  His harrowing escape from Europe on a French fishing scow and a British torpedo boat, his meeting with Allied generals in England and Paul's landing in France with commandos who battled for possession of an early German radar installation, make this an exciting re-creation of those tense days of World War II when the fate of the world hung in the balance.

Radar Commandos
Reviewed by Edward Garboczi
Radar Commandos, by Bernard Glemser, is a historical novel based on true incidents (middle school reading level). At first, radar was exclusively used by the Allies, but Germany did know about the science and technology, and quickly developed their own version. In the novel, a new German radar station went up on the coast of France facing Great Britain. This was reported by the French Underground to their contacts in England, who sent a commando team to check it out. They were helped by a French boy, Paul, who is the hero of the story. Exciting clandestine action and adventure, based on historical events. If you ever want to know more about the secret radio/radar technology war between Great Britain and Nazi Germany, read
