This is the exciting story of a salmon's journey to the sea and her return, years later, to the place of her birth. It is told in simple, concise words that a beginning reader knows and understands.
The man from the Fish and Wildlife explained to Aku, a young Indian boy, that he tagged the salmon to learn more about them—where they went, and whether they came back to their first home. Aku named one of the young salmon Red Tag, and promised to watch for her return.
Soon Red Tag was big enough to start her journey to the sea. The next years were filled with danger for the young fish. But Red Tag survived and grew. Now it was time for her return to the river. It was time for Red Tag to lay her eggs. Aku, also older and bigger, recognized his salmon. Red Tag had come home. Arnold Lobel's striking pictures of the salmon's amazing life cycle are filled with drama and detail.
