Behind Dorothea Lange's iconic "Migrant Mother" photograph is the story of a girl and her family struggling to survive.
Dust storms and dead crops force young Ruby's family to leave their home in Oklahoma and cross the country. Work is tough and food is scarce, but Ruby tries hard to hold on to hope.
Then on one fateful day, a mysterious woman arrives in their camp and takes six photographs. Once published, the photographs open the country's eyes to the plight of migrant workers and inspire change.
Bleak yet beautiful illustrations depict this biography of an important photograph, a partially imagined story of the family that became the symbol of the Great Depression.
