Tough Enough and Sassy were a long way from home—far from Beanie and the rest of the Tatum family and the Tatum farm in the Great Smoky Mountains. It had started when the pony, Sassy, went lame, and the Tatums took him to the vet's farm to stay until he was well enough again. They left Tough Enough with him, because the pony and the dog were almost inseparable. But the two animals were unhappy on the strange farm: they missed Beanie and their own home. So when Tough Enough found a way for Sassy to get out of the meadow, they ran off to make their way back to the Tatums.
But many things still stood in their way: first, a man named Will Bumgarner, who carried them off to a very strange new home indeed; and after that, hardship, starvation and danger. But the pony and the dog had long memories, and through it all something always led them back to the Tatum farm—and home.
Ruth Carroll's full-color illustrations capture the beauty of the mountains and the excitement of this fine story.
