Sandy thought his Virginia vacation would be fun, with plenty of time for bird-spotting, but he was a little appalled to find himself a misfit with the younger Trowbridges whom he was visiting for the first time. Thirteen-year-old Ashe thought nothing mattered but horses; twelve-year-old Matty couldn't understand a boy who wasn't horse-crazy; only seven-year-old Carter, with a penchant for always being where he wasn't wanted, was Sandy's friend. It wasn't until those three baby woodchucks were mysteriously drowned that they all became allies in pursuit of a mystery which centered about the legendary family treasure that had belonged to their romantic ancestor, The Rogue.
Whose was the scarred arm that Sandy saw in the bushes at the edge of the Rogue River? What did the drowning of the woodchucks have to do with the other strange happenings—such as the disappearance of The Rogue's daybook in which the children hoped to find a clue to the elusive treasure? At best it was hard to pursue clues when there was a horse-show and a 4H Club Fair to prepare for—especially after Sandy found he did like to ride horses. But Sandy persevered and, eventually, affairs came to a dramatic climax.
A sure-fire combination of outdoor activities, horseback riding, horse-shows, and 4H enthusiasts, by the popular author of such favorite horse stories as HOBBY HORSE HILL; MELODY, MUTTON BONE, AND SAM; and others.
