The big swamps of the world are perhaps the most mysterious and unfamiliar parts of the earth's surface. But some people do live in swamplands. Seminole Indians have lived in the Everglades of Florida for hundreds of years. People live in the swamps of Africa, as well as in the marshes of Iraq, and in the bogs of Ireland. But even a familiar swamp like the Everglades is unknown to most people, and some sections are impenetrable.
Swamps are the homes of fascinating plants and animals. Snakes and other reptiles swim in the sluggish waters. Fierce and unusual animals live in the dense undergrowth, and in tropical swamps exotic flowers and birds of brilliant plumage are found.
This book explains how swamps are formed, where they are, the ways in which they are alike and in which they differ, and the various forms of life found there. All this is shown in Louis Darling's skillful pictures. Illustrations and text combine to make this an informative and beautiful book.
