"Miss Marvelous had given her dogs the warm, brown, tasty names of Pumpkin, Ginger, and Spice, because they were the warm, brown color of the pies and cakes and cookies in the Marvelous Bake Shop."

...So when Spice has three puppies, naturally they have to be given just as tasty names. You have probably already guessed that one is called Syrup; and Mr. Silver, the carpenter, chooses the other names: Peanuts and Taffy.

Jimmie and Sally and Jack and Polly, Miss Marvelous' young friends, are naturally very excited about the new dachshund puppies, and Syrup keeps adding to the excitement as he grows old enough to get into mischief.

Perhaps best of all comes when there's a very special wedding-and-puppy party to celebrate—well, a wedding, and the new puppies!
