Grandfather was very old and Mary Lou was only eight, so when he came to live with Mary Lou's family is was both exciting and strange. She and he had long talks and short walks together, and got along fine.

There were signs of trouble, though. Mary Lou's mother became busier than ever, and she worried about the children's having to keep quiet for weeks on end so as not to disturb Grandfather.
