This exciting and moving story is laid in the Prairie of the Sac country, in the 1830's, when white settlers, anxious to own this rich land, were slowly pushing the Indian out of his old hunting grounds.
The central theme is woven around the friendship of young David Howe and his Indian friend, Swift Otter. It is Swift Otter who warns David the night the Sioux, disguised as Sacs, raid the Howe homestead. It is he who saves David from attack by renegade Indians. It is he who warns the white settlers that . . . .But there are also happy quiet expeditions in the woods, where Swift Otter teaches David about clouds, weather, birds, wild animals.
Against the background of this dramatic period move many historical characters — Black Hawk, the great Sac Chieftain—Zachary Taylor, later president of the United States.
