FOREWORD
"The Forest of Swords", while an independent story, based upon the World War, continues the fortunes of John Scott, Philip Lannes, and their friends who have appeared already in "The Guns of Europe". As was stated in the first volume, the author was in Austria and Germany for a month after the war began, and then west to England. He saw the arrival of the Emperor, Francis Joseph, in Vienna, the first striking event in the gigantic struggle, and witnessed the mobilization of their armies by three great nations.
From the book
Readers of Joseph A. Altsheler's books will be thrilled by this tale of danger and heroism. As the story opens, during World War I, the German army is advancing on Paris—a mere fifteen miles from the city. French citizens are fleeing to the country and outlying villages to escape the troops and find any possible refuge.
The book closes with the battle of the Marne; one of the great turning points in history. Here all of our friends are reunited and fight together to save France. Boys of all ages will like this historic adventure story.
