The story of a boy who came from France alone in 1758 to join his soldier-father in old Fort Niagara, in the days when the French and English were contending for control of the Great Lakes territory, the Indians' fealty and the fur trade. His adventures at the Fort make an absorbing story of this important period in Colonial history, and the background forms a rich pageant of frontier life. Voyageurs, trappers, Indians and their captives, soldiers and settlers bring action and excitement to this historic frontier fort at the great gateway to the West. Its surrender to the English after a gallant defence comes at the climax of the story. Mrs. Orton has known the locale of the book all her life and has devoted months to research of the history which forms a truthful basis for a very human and delightful story.
The romantic theme of the gold-laced coat itself is one which will appeal to the thousands of boys and girls who enjoyed this author's covered-wagon story, "The Treasure in the Little Trunk."
