Heinrich Schliemann was the greatest archaeologist who ever lived! Or so he would like you to believe.
He did live a remarkable life, one filled with exotic travels and amazing finds, including the discovery of the lost city of Troy, made famous by Homer's epic poem The Iliad, as well as other breathtaking treasures. But a little digging into Schliemann's life story shows that he couldn't resist embroidering the truth or even breaking the law when it suited his purposes.
Small and sickly as a boy, with little status or wealth, Schliemann nevertheless decided that he was worthy of a romantic and heroic life. Through obsessive perseverance, excessive self-confidence, impressive dumb luck, and a bit of creative storytelling, Heinrich's dreams came true.
A wry and entertaining portrait of a most unorthodox and unlikely hero.
