F. N. Monjo's popular histories for young readers, often told from the point of view of a child, have earned him high praise and won him many readers. Now Mr. Monjo adds another impressive history to his list of fine books.
The House on Stink Alley is a tale of the Pilgrim refugees in Leyden, Holland, after they fled from England and before they emigrated to America. It is told by Love, or Love-of-God Brewster, as he was named by his father, William Brewster. From Love we learn about the tensions under which the Saints from Scrooby lived in Holland, of their reasons for fearing the long arm of King James, and of the dramatic and dangerous events that brought them to the New World in 1620, in search of freedom.
It is historical fiction, for nothing is known of what young Love Brewster actually saw or heard or said in the House on Stink alley. Even so, all of the major facts on which this story is based are historically true.
