The story of the juggler of Notre Dame is an old one whose charm has lasted many hundreds of years. It has been told aloud, made into an opera, written and sung in many languages. Here in a handsome new edition reproduced from the original art, is the unsurpassed rendition of this beloved tale, by a two-time Caldecott Medalist and one of the foremost American picture book artists.
To do this beautiful book, Barbara Cooney made a trip to Paris to see the thirteenth-century manuscript on which the legend is based. Then she toured France, sketching the places where the little juggler might have wandered. Once home, she worked with inspiration and fervor on the text and drawings for many, many months.
The result is a book that glows with the life and color of those ancient days . . . . and with the special joy and reverence of that little boy.
