It was the littlest house the children had ever seen. There it stood beyond the turn in the road, empty, except for a stove. But what a perfect play house! Jean and Lydia and even little Mark agreed, and their joy was complete when the owner made them a loan of if for the whole summer.
It was a happy summer. "The Littlest House", as they called it, stood near the harbor. It was about a hundred years old and full of the tang of the sea and vivid memories of the past. With a real reverence for that past and a warm affection for the house, the children found furnishings for it and made it the scene of many happy good times, new friendships and surprising experiences.
The house had a happy time too, the owner believed, so that when fall came she said, "It will be doing the Littlest House a kindness if the children can keep it company through the winter, too, if they would." And the children were speechless with delight. You'll be too—for the children, but especially for the Littlest House.
