One day, a poor old fisherman catches an unusual, beautiful fish—a talking Gold Fish! The Gold Fish begs the old man to release him, which he does, refusing any payment for this act of kindness. The fisherman's greedy wife, however, thinks differently. She commands her husband to go back to the Gold Fish, and ask for a new washtub. The old man does, and a new washtub magically appears. But the old woman is not satisfied—she asks for a new cottage, then for a mansion. Her greed seems to have no limit—until the magic Gold Fish finally puts her in her place.
Demi uses classic Russian motifs in her luminous, gold-encrusted paintings, evoking the rich art and architecture of Pushkin's Russia. This traditional story, with its lyrical rhythm and satisfying ending, has a timeless appeal sure to enchant readers of all ages.
