Isaiah stands out amongst the ancient prophets as an inspiring poet, a humanitarian, a social reformer and a practical statesman. But what sort of person was he? What sort of life did he lead? What were his antecedents and what profound experiences motivated him to become a prophet? All that ancient Jewish tradition tells us -- on what older authority we do not know -- is that he was related to the royal family of Judah and that his outspoken criticism gained for him the enmity of the wicked King Manasseh. One never reads Isaiah's prophetic book without wishing he could know more about him.
Miriam Gilbert has concretized this wish. Drawing upon the growing knowledge of the historical background, Miss Gilbert has created situations and events which give a possible answer to the questions that Isaiah's words and acts arouse. She has him go through trials and experiences that could well have laid the foundation for the personality that shines through his inspiring and moving words. Isaiah stands out as a real human being as a result of Miss Gilbert's imaginative contribution to his biography.
