One day a miller and his son set out for a neighboring fair to sell their donkey. They had not gone far when they met a troop of girls.
"Look there!" cried one of them, "did you ever see such fools, to be trudging along the road on foot, when they might be riding!"
How the good-natured miller followed her suggestion and tried to please everybody else along the way, ending by pleasing nobody, has been a delight to generations of readers.
Roger Duvoisin felt that the times call for a reminder of the wisdom contained in this tale. His illustrations — authentic seventeenth-century scenes in bright exciting colors — form a vivid background for this book based on the James version, with a fillip from La Fontaine.
