Alvin Tresselt, whose books about nature have become favorites in primary grades throughout the country, now departs from his nature theme to retell an old folk tale.

Like the famous shoe that housed the Old Woman and her too-many children, a mitten, lost by a little boy in the woods, magically holds almost all the forest creatures that come crowding in.

The illustrations, executed in Yaroslava's appealing technique, combine delicately detailed line, and clear, fresh color. Interesting to many children will be the authentic Ukrainian designs that adorn the costumes worn by the animal characters that one by one walk into the story—and the mitten.
