"There once was a lady, the
one in this book,
Who was known as a perfectly
marvelous cook."
Everyone in town loved her pancakes because:
"Her pancakes were feathery,
fluffy, and flavory,
Tender and toothsome, incredibly
savory—
Served with a syrup so pure
and delightful
That some people swooned when
they'd bitten a biteful."
Virginia Kahl is once more having fun with cooking. The goodwife in this story is a better cook than the much-loved Duchess, but she has a terrible fault—she will make only one pancake for each person. Finally a passing beggar tricks her into providing more—and the townspeople take note.
