Book Guide

It was from Thomas Raddall's own town of Liverpool, Nova Scotia, that the brig Rover sailed long ago to fight the King's enemies on the Spanish Main. The time was the Napoleonic wars when the Nova Scotians' trade with the West Indies had been hard hit by the attacks of French and Spanish ships. The Rover was a privateer, manned and commanded by Nova Scotians. Her captain, Alexander Godfrey, carried "Letters of Marque and Reprisal" furnished him by the Governor of Nova Scotia and the Royal Navy had lent him cannon and ammunition.

This is the story of the Rover's great battle off Puerto Cabello when she was trapped and attacked by four Spanish war vessels; of how Captain Godfrey and his forty-five men and boys beat off three of them, captured the Spanish flagship and sailed her home to Nova Scotia as a prize.

Alive with excitement and adventure, faithful in eveyr detail, this is truly a great story, told by a great storyteller.
